LipiFlow® – FDA Cleared and Proven to Be Effective in
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is a common cause of chronic dry eye syndrome. MGD occurs when the protective oil that normally flows from the eyelid (meibomian) glands slows or stops. Over time, blockage and structural damage of the glands occurs. The oil acts as the front line of protection for the tears and lubricates the surface of the eyes when you blink. When these glands are not healthy, it causes the tear film to rapidly evaporate, leaving the eye’s surface exposed. This exposure can cause discomfort that increases over time and impacts quality of vision. This can result in irritating dry eye symptoms. An ophthalmologist at Center For Sight can check your eyes for MGD during a routine eye exam.
Mucin Layer- The Sticky Foundation
The mucin (mucous) layer at the bottom of the tear film provides a “sticky” foundation and acts as a barrier to the eye surface.
Aqueous Layer- The Watery Center
The aqueous layer is the “juicy” center that is comprised of tears produced by the lacrimal glands.
Lipid Layer- The Oily Top
Finally, the top “oily” lipid layer of the tear film is made up of lipids or oils produced from the meibomian glands. When MGD is present, our glands do not consistently produce the oil necessary for a stable tear film and the aqueous layer will evaporate.
LipiFlow® – FDA Cleared and Proven to Be Effective in Clinical Studies
LipiFlow uses vectored thermal pulsating eyepieces known as Activators. LipiFlow Activators are precisely designed to provide necessary inner and outer lid contact to properly apply heat and massage and evacuate the meibomian glands. The entire treatment takes approximately 12 minutes.
The LipiFlow® Activator, a single-use sterile device, safely and comfortably delivers automated therapeutic energies to each meibomian gland while protecting the delicate structures of the patient’s eye. Supported by 36 patents and seven years of dedicated research, LipiFlow® provides a level of accuracy and quality that allows our physicians to treat MGD patients with confidence and ease.
Its contoured design vaults the cornea and protects the eye allowing a maximum therapeutic temperature of 43 degrees Celsius to reach glands from the inner eyelid, without damaging the eyelid or delicate structures of the globe. Space-age insulation protects the cornea from exceeding a safe 39.5 degrees Celsius, while an intelligent pressure feedback loop sends pulsed sequences to expel blockages. Force equalization protects the globe from pressure transmission by focusing energy only on the eyelid.
Delivered through the LipiFlow® Activator, Vectored Thermal Pulse™ (VTP) technology maximizes results while delivering patient comfort, applying a combination of heat and pressure to the inner eyelid to safely remove gland obstructions and stagnant gland content. Patented vectored heat and adaptive force equalization targets the pulse, heat, and pressure on the meibomian glands to maximize effectiveness. Therapeutic motion provides proximal to distal parastalsis to clear gland contents.
